Senior Vitality & Fall Prevention Program

Live Independently, Fall-Free
8 weeks Low–Moderate intensity

Program Overview

The Senior Vitality & Fall Prevention Program is an 8-week evidence-based program designed specifically for older adults aged 60 and above who want to maintain independence, prevent falls, and manage age-related conditions including osteoarthritis, balance disorders, and general deconditioning. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths and hospitalizations in older adults, yet research consistently shows that targeted balance and strengthening programs reduce fall rates by 30–40%. Our program is grounded in the Otago Exercise Program — the most well-researched fall prevention protocol in the world — combined with Tai Chi for balance, progressive resistance training for muscle strength, and education on fall risk modification. Every patient receives a comprehensive fall risk assessment at entry including Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go test, and home hazard evaluation. The program respects the unique physiology and pace of older adults. Sessions are warm, encouraging, and social. Many participants describe the group classes as the highlight of their week, providing not just physical benefit but vital connection and motivation. We also conduct home visits for high-risk individuals to assess and modify fall hazards in the home environment. Family members are welcome to attend and learn how to support their loved one safely.

Program FAQs

As soon as medically cleared. Following a fall, the risk of another fall is highest in the subsequent months. Early intervention breaks this cycle. Even if there was a fracture, we can begin the program once cleared by the surgeon or physician. Starting within 4–6 weeks of a fall-related fracture is ideal for optimal recovery.
Absolutely. We design all exercises within a pain-free or minimal-pain range. Many patients with severe osteoarthritis report that appropriate strengthening actually reduces their joint pain over time by improving muscle support around the joint. Our physiotherapists are skilled at modifying exercises to suit any level of arthritis severity.
Yes. Many participants use walking aids, and the program is designed to work with them. We will also assess whether your current aid is the most appropriate type and size for you — an incorrectly fitted walking aid is itself a fall risk. Our goal is to maximize your safety and mobility, whether that means continuing with an aid or gradually reducing dependence on one.
For high-risk patients who cannot travel to the clinic, we offer home visit physiotherapy sessions for the initial assessment and the first 2 weeks of the program. We also partner with local transport services in Vellore to help senior patients attend clinic sessions safely. Please ask our reception team about home visit availability.
